About the Pre-Service Certificate in Education, Professional Graduate Certificate in Education and Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector) programme
The Pre-Service programme is suitable for those wanting to pursue a career in teaching in the lifelong learning sector; that is teaching students age 14 years and above. The programme is full time and suitable for those who are not currently teaching.
The programme is designed to develop the appropriate skills and knowledge in identifying learning needs, designing, delivering, assessing and evaluating teaching and learning. In addition you will explore curriculum design and professionalism. You will be provided with a placement and mentor through which you will apply and practice the knowledge and skills gained.
The programme aims to produce teachers who are flexible and innovative and who can work as members of interdisciplinary teams who have an interest in the academic and pastoral well being of students. Upon successful completion of the programme, students are able to apply for Qualified Teaching Learning and Skills (QTLS) status through the Education
The minimum qualification you need to gain entry to the course is at Level 3 or 4 in the subject(s) that you intend to teach. Normally, the qualification you need to teach your subjects would meet these requirements. Applicants must have GCSE Maths and English at grade C or above (or Level 2 equivalent) before attending for interview. Those wishing to enter the Professional or Postgraduate Certificate in Education routes must hold a UK first degree (or equivalent).
All applicants will need a work placement to gain the required 100 hours practical teaching experience; the course team will endeavour to find an appropriate placement for applicants subject to availability, an interview and two appropriate references. Applicants should also aim to complete a minimum of 5 days experience shadowing in an appropriate setting. A clean DBS check is also required.

Certificate in Education is studied at levels 4 and 5; Professional Graduate Certificate in Education is studied at levels 5 and 6; Postgraduate Certificate in Education is studied at levels 6 and 7
Learning & Teaching Methods
The course requires approximately 1200 hours of Teaching and Learning combining workshops, seminars and group work, online support peer observation and 1:1 tutorials, directed reading, collaborating with peers, independent study and reflection, module assignments, tutor observation and feedback, work based practice and mentor support.
You will need to have a professional commitment to the course, particularly attendance and will need to manage your time and personal circumstances.
You will learn the fundamentals of teaching practice and theory and will be able to structure and deliver your own schemes of work and lessons in your specialist field.Our last Ofsted inspection rated the department as ‘outstanding’.
