About the In-Service Certificate in Education, Professional Graduate Certificate in Education and Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector) programme

These courses (validated by the University of Hull) offer an In-Service (ie for those already teaching) programme to develop the appropriate skills for designing and delivering learning, assessing student progress and evaluating course quality.

Students will develop academic knowledge and its application to teaching practice in a variety of contexts. The programme is one of continuing professional development for serving teachers and trainers.

These programmes lead to the award of Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status for those teaching in appropriate contexts. They do not lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) for those intending to teach in schools.
However, since 1 April 2012, further education teachers who have been awarded QTLS by the Institute for Learning (IfL) and are members of the IfL are recognised as qualified teachers in schools.

This will allow them to be appointed to permanent posts in state maintained schools in England and they will be paid on the qualified teachers’ pay scale. It will be for the schools and local authorities to decide whether a teacher with QTLS is suited for a post and to teach a particular subject.
